The ion-exchange resin ensures the water softening inside the cartridge.
Calcium and magnesium ions (both ions are minerals that actually cause water hardness) are bonded and selectively replaced by sodium ions. Sodium ions leave no salt crusts of low solubility, in contrast to calcium or magnesium ions. The contained resin is a large-pored acidic cation exchanger.
The cation exchanger is an ion exchanger, with which dissolved ions can be replaced by other ions of the same electrical charge (by Calcium and Magnesium: 2+). The ions to be exchanged/replaced are bonded on the ion exchange material, that on its part, releases in the solution an equivalent amount of substance of previously bonded ions. For example a cation-ion exchanger, calcium-cations, that are disolved in normal tap water, can be replaced by sodium ions that are bonded to the ion-exchanger. Such a cation-ion exchange is also present in the dishwashers. Inside the dishwashers, water is prepaired for the washing steps, water that is free of calcium-ions, which would normally lead to limescale formation. When this cation-exchange is used up and fully saturated with calcium-cations, it must be regenerated. This takes place by means of the offer on highly concentrated solution of sodium chloride (common salt) on account of which the bonded calcium-cations are displaced/replaced again. This process is called ion exchange regeneration.
The ion exchange principle is based on the fact, that ions the more they are bonded on the ion-exchanger, the higher is their charge and larger their ionic radius. For example Na+ is replaced by Ca2+ in this ion-exchange, but Ca2+ is also replaced by Al3+. The strongest-bonding ion replaces the weak bonding ion from the binding sites of the ion exchange materials. It must be ensured that the undesired ion that should be removed from the solution, is bonded stronger than the ion bonded on the ion exchange resin.
For this other important factors:
the pH-value of the solution in connection with the type and number of the binding sites of ion exchange materials and also the respective substance concentration. The resin can be regenerated with 10% saline solution. The cartridge contains approx. 0,6 Liter volume resin that suffices for a approx. 800 Liter water quantity. The resin can be regenerated afterwards with 10% saline solution.
Suitable for 10" (254mm) water filters of standard drinking water filter devices. Replacement filter for 10" (254mm) over and under sink water filter.
The durability of the filter cartridge is strongly dependent on the quality of the water to be filtered, for this reason the liter indication is only approximate, for soft water the filter durabilty is higher.
